Indiana Intern Day: A Day in the Life

Indiana Intern Day 2024

Indiana Intern Day

Indiana Intern Day is a statewide celebration recognizing the contributions of interns across various industries in Indiana. This event highlights the importance of internships in fostering the next generation of professionals, offering students and recent graduates invaluable hands-on experience, networking opportunities, and insights into their chosen fields.

Raybourn Group International (RGI) is celebrating Indiana Intern Day 2024 by offering a unique glimpse into the daily experiences of our interns with this ‘Day in the Life’ excerpt. This initiative features a personal experience from an RGI intern. By sharing these narratives, RGI aims to highlight the valuable skills and professional growth interns gain during their time at the organization. This underscores RGI’s dedication to providing an enriching and supportive internship experience.

A Day in the Life

I have been working at Raybourn Group International (RGI) as a summer marketing and communications intern since early May. In my role, I work under Senior Communications Coordinator Karly Wolfcale and Senior Membership and Communications Coordinator Andrew de Bie. Due to the multitude of services and large variety of clients RGI provides services for, each day is a bit different. However, here is a good idea of what a typical Monday in my life looks like.

7:30 a.m. My alarm goes off, and I start to get ready for the day!

8:00 a.m. I eat a quick breakfast, make my lunch for the day, and pack my work bag. I make sure to always have my work essentials, including a notebook, my favorite pencils and pens, my airpods, and a refillable water bottle. RGI provides me with anything I could possibly need for a day at the office!

8:30 a.m. I head into my car and drive to work. My commute is only around 20 minutes, but I like being a few minutes early.

8:55 a.m. I scan into the building and take the elevator up to our office on the third floor.

9:00 a.m. It’s time to get organized for the week! I log into my computer and check my Outlook calendar, emails, Microsoft Teams messages, and my intern project form. I receive projects through a Microsoft Form that anyone in the office can submit to. The form has them fill out information about the project, including the client, directions for completion, any important files or links I may need, a deadline date, and how I should deliver the finished project back to them. Afterwards, I like to write out all the projects I have and other tasks I need to complete and prioritize for the week in my notebook. This helps me stay on top of my work and complete my projects before their deadlines.

9:30 a.m. It’s time for a meeting! Every other Monday, the RGI staff has a meeting called “Monday Morning Life Hacks.” Each meeting is hosted by a different staff member who picks a topic they know about or want to know more about. Some topics that have been discussed include healthy recipes, summer life hacks, the famous European hike, El Camino de Santiago, and more. These meetings have helped me learn more about my co-workers!

10:00 a.m. Now that the meeting is over, it’s time for me to get started on my projects. As a marketing and communications intern, a lot of my projects are focused on graphic design, social media, website editing, and writing. The projects I’m working on have been great for improving my skills and learning about the different responsibilities staff members have here at RGI.

12:30 p.m. Time for some lunch! My usual includes a PB&J, some fruit, chips, and a sweet treat. Usually once a week I eat lunch with an RGI staff member! It’s a great way to get to know my co-workers and learn more about different association management careers.

1:30 p.m. It’s time for a learning opportunity. Usually, a couple times a week, I will have meetings with different RGI staff members about their expertise on certain topics and programs related to their profession. I recently got some interview and resume tips from RGI’s HR professional, Kim Paugh. I have also been taught by other RGI staff members about a popular email marketing program, Mailchimp, and a website content management program called WordPress.

2:30 p.m. Last meeting of the day! As an intern, I’m getting the unique opportunity to attend one of RGI’s client’s conferences. At the conference, there will be a number of keynote speakers, breakout sessions, and networking opportunities. Several RGI staff members are attending the event and even speaking. It will be an incredible experience to learn from my co-workers and other professionals. Additionally, RGI staff has done a great job at helping me feel prepared for this experience by walking me through the schedule, explaining attire expectations, and giving me other great tips from those who have been in years previous.

3:30 p.m. Now it’s time to continue making progress on some of my projects. This afternoon I am working on designing a postcard for one of the association’s annual conference coming up and creating social media posts highlighting recent association award winners!

5:00 p.m. It’s time to go home! I get my space prepared for my next workday by shutting down my devices and cleaning up my things. I grab my work bag and take the elevator down to the parking lot to start my journey home.

Hopefully this has given some good insight into a typical day as an RGI marketing and communications intern. This internship has been an amazing experience for me. I can tell the RGI staff places an importance on learning, professional development, and preparing their interns for their futures in the workplace throughout their internship program.

The program offered numerous opportunities to enhance my skills, develop professionally, and contribute to my professional portfolio through various projects. I would encourage anyone interested in association management, graphic design, communications, personal relations, and more to apply to the RGI internship program. The internship applications can be on RGI’s website on their career page.
